Tutkijoiden yö Sodankylässä / Researchers' Night in Sodankylä

Yhteinen avaruusmatkamme avaruusalus planeetta Maalla - Tutkijoiden yö Sodankylässä

(For presentations in English, please check the timetable below!)

Tärkeämpiäkin kysymyksiä on olemassa.

Vacancy: Postdoc Position in Radio Science

KAIRA site in Kilpisjärvi. Photo Craig Heinselman, EISCAT.
"Remote sensing of energetic particle precipitation into atmosphere"

The postdoc position in Radio Science is part of the profiling actions of University of Oulu, where selected spearheads of research are supported in the research strategy of the university. At the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory (SGO), the position is mainly meant to boost development of phased-array radio techniques, measurement methods and related science applications in preparation to the use of the forthcoming next-generation incoherent scatter radar facility, EISCAT_3D.

There is growing evidence that the energetic particle precipitation (EPP) originating from the Sun can significantly modulate the middle-atmospheric dynamics, and possibly alter the global atmospheric circulation via ionic production of minor species (such as odd hydrogen and odd nitrogen), thus causing subsequent ozone loss in the stratosphere. The Postdoc project investigates both the EPP and the photoionisation taking place in the mesosphere-lower thermosphere (MLT) altitudes (mainly 60-100 km). For the EPP, the altitude of the maximum ionisation is a direct measure of precipitation energy. This energy-height dependence makes it possible to invert the EPP flux density spectrum from any height-dependent electron density measurement.

The project exploits a comprehensive set of ground-based (and sounding rocket) electron density data obtained by various radio methods, of which the most important ones are the incoherent scatter radars (EISCAT) and the Kilpisjärvi Imaging Receiver Array, KAIRA. An important tool available at SGO is the in-house developed detailed Sodankylä Ion-neutral Chemistry (SIC).

Deadline: 28th September 2018, 24:00 (Finnish local time).

To apply, please see the full job description and use the electronic application form.

For more information, please contact Ass. Prof. Antti Kero, e-mail: antti.kero(at)sgo.fi, tel.: +358442894669.

Tuleva revontulikausi

Klikkaamalla saa parempi kartta.
Meille tulivat jo ensimmäiset kysymykset milloin voidaan katsoa taas revontulet. Vastaus riippuu leveysasteesta. Etelässä pimeys palautuu aikaisemmin kuin pohjoisessa.

Kuinka pimeää pitäisi olla? SGO:n tieteelliset kamerat toimivat kun aurinko on vähintään 10° horisontin alapuolella. Toki on mahdollista nähdä erittäin kirkkaat revontulet jo ennen sitä.

Yllä oleva kartta näyttää minä päivänä aurinko on kesän jälkeen ensimmäistä kerta 10° horisontin alapuolella Suomessa. Kannattaa muistaa, että kesäaikana yön pimein aikaa on klo 01 ympäri.

Meidän tieteelliset revontulikamerat eivät ole vältämättä näinä päivinä alkamassa mittauksinsa operatiivisista syistä.

Start of the Northern Lights Season

Click on map for better resolution.

Almost three weeks after the summer solstice, we start to get questions regarding when the Northern Lights can be seen again after the Polar Day. The answer depends on where you are: the further south you are, the earlier it will get dark enough.

How dark does it need to be? Our scientific cameras operate when the Sun is at least 10° below the horizon. However, if there are particularly bright Northern Lights, you might be able to see them already earlier.

The map above shows the days on which the Sun will be at least 10° below the horizon in Finland. Be aware, however, that due to summer time (daylight saving time), the darkest time of the night is around 01:00h in Finland.

Note further, that our scientific cameras will not necessarily be back on location on the first day that it is dark enough. Their annual maintenance might well delay the schedule.

25.2.1918 - Observatorion toiminta keskeytyy 4 kuukaudeksi

Sata vuotta sitten Suomi oli ajautunut sisällissotaan. Helmikuun 25. päivänä vaikutukset ulottuivat konkreettisesti observatorion aikasarjoihin, sillä tänään tulee kuluneeksi tasan sata vuotta siitä, kun observatorion johtaja Heikki Lindfors pysäytti observatorion toiminnan ja matkasi Tampereelle taisteluihin, joissa hän pian kaatui. Havainnot olivat keskeytyksissä aina kesäkuun  1918 alkuun saakka, jolloin havainnot saatiin taas uudelleen käyntiin Jaakko Keräsen toimesta.

Tämä vähemmän tunnettu neljän kuukauden katkos on toinen merkittävä havaintokatkos Sodankylän tänään jo 105. havaintovuoden aikana. Tunnetumpi on Lapin sodan (syyskuu 1944 - joulukuu 1945) aiheuttama katkos, jolloin observatorio tuhoutui ja uudelleenrakennettiin nykyiselle paikalleen.

Sodankylän geomagneettisen observatorion vaihteluhuone
ajalta ennen Lapin sotaa. Kuva: SGO:n arkisto.

Alla on observatorion toimintakertomus vuodelta 1918. Seuraavassa blogissa on lisää observatorion varhaisista vuosista Heikki Nevanlinnan kirjoittamana.

Kertomus Suomalaisen Tiedeakatemian Magneettisen Observatorion toiminnasta vuonna 1918

Maisteri Lindforsin lähtö keskeytti observatorion tieteellisen toiminnan n. kolmeksi kuukaudeksi ja hänen kaatumisensa Tampereen edustalla maaliskuun 28. päivänä pakotti, monivuotisen ja ansiokkaan varsinaisen johtajan, fil. maisteri J. Keräsen siirryttyä toiselle toiminta-alalle, uskomaan observatorion johdon allekirjoittaneelle, kokonaan uudelle miehelle Suomessa suoritetun magneettisen tutkimustyön alalla.

Observatorion johtajan muutos on tuonut mukanaan myöskin apulaisen muutoksen; apulaiseksi maisteri, rouva Siiri Keräsen sijaan on tullut maisteri, rouva Hanna Levanto. Kaiken lisäksi on menneen vuoden kuluessa tapahtunut myöskin vahtimestarin muutos; eron pyytäneen vahtimestari K. Gummeruksen sijaan on tullut T. Sedergren Pielavedeltä syyskuun 1. päivänä. Observatorion toiminta on siis joutunut kokonaan uuden henkilökunnan haltuun.

Observatorion tieteellistä työtä on kesäkuun 1. päivästä lähtien jatkettu entiseen tapaan. Koska maisteri Keränen on ottanut pitääkseen huolta kaikkien aikaisempien vuosien havaintoaineksen muokkaamisesta, niin allekirjoittaneen johdolla on alettu muokata suorastaan menneen vuoden ainehistoa.

Perusasemana Meteorologisen Keskuslaitoksen Suomessa toimittamaa magneettista mittausta varten on Sodankylän Magneettiseen Observatorioon menneen vuoden aikana turvautunut ainoastaan maisteri Keränen, suorittamalla täällä viime kesäkuussa magneettisen matkakoneitten vartaushavaintoja.

Viime vuoden menojen kokonaissumma on 14,479 mk, 76 p. (edellisen vuoden 11,087 mk, 46 p.).

Monenlaisia muutoksia ovat siis vuoden 1918 myrskyt saaneet aikaan tämän syrjässä olevan pienen observatorionkin elämässä. Kunpa alkanut vuosi voisi jälleen ruveta osottamaan hiljaista kehitystä, eduksi ennen kaikkea tieteelliselle työlle!

Sodankylän Magneettisessa Observatoriossa tammikuun 16 p:nä 1919.

E. R. LEVANTO

Lisäys

Edelliseen kertomukseen liitettäköön joku sana observatoruion hoidosta sota-aikana.

Heikki Nevanlinna: Sodankylän geofysiikan observatorion varhaista historiaa

100 vuotta sitten

Observatorio aloitti vuonna 1918 viidennen toimivuotensa.

Lapissa vallitsi monin paikoin vaikea elintarvikepula, jopa suoranainen nälänhätä.

Olot kohenevat

Observatorion vaiheista on julkaistu Heikki Nevanlinnan

Ilmatieteen laitokselle.

Tänä vuonna SGO palkkaa 3-4 opiskelijaa pääsääntöisesti kesäkaudelle. Haku on avoinna 28.2.2018 saakka ja hakemuslomakkeen löydät täältä:
