Traineeship and summer work 2022 at SGO

SGO's summer work and university traineeship call is now open until February 20th 2022 for 9 positions in different research units of SGO. The units are located in Sodankylä and Oulu (seismology and cosmic ray groups). The main target of this call is university students but other candidates are also considered when applicable. There are also few summer work position available for for 15-18 year olds (see the end of this post) considering a career in science.

The application process for university traineeship is done in SAIMA. Below are the topics. Note! University traineeship E-mail applications will not be handled in 2022 call. Please, fill the form in SAIMA. The call in SAIMA is in two parts where the first part is in Finnish. These positions are also available in English, please refer to position numbers below in your application. The second part of the call is in English. You can apply to both calls.

The topics in call published in Finnish include:

  1. The trainee participates in the continuous observatory measurement work, participates in observations and documentation partially during staff summer holidays, participates data handling and archiving. The tasks depend on the skills the trainee has. University level studies in space physics and geophysics are preferred. (Supervisor: Thomas Ulich/Tero Raita)
  2. Complicated magnetic structures take us to get to know changes in magnetic environment both in short and long time scales. In short time scales the twisted structures of the magnetic field (in near Earth space and in Sun) and their annual and seasonal variation. In long time scales the movement of magnetic poles are studied and the physical reasons will be investigated. Changes in the magnetic environment cause effects in every day systems as distribution of electricity, navigation, and communication. That is the reason why it is important to forecast the occurrence and intensity of these disturbances. This topic is a part of Earth-Space Research Ecosystem infrastructure on the Finnish national roadmap and EU PITHIA project. (Supervisor: Eija Tanskanen)
  3. Classification and analysis of audible radio waves that have not been observed earlier. SGO has the world’s most sensitive ELF-VLF receiver in Pomokaira, Sodankylä. Its sensitivity is even 100 times better than any other similar receiver in the world. It can detect e.g., every single lightning discharge around the Earth, and such emissions that are generated in the Earth's magnetosphere, and what others cannot observe. Task will be collecting these emissions from SGO data and classify them into different groups. The work will expectedly lead to a research publication. 2 positions available. (Supervisor: Jyrki Manninen)
  4. In this work we study the northern lights, their basic physics and variations during past 100 years. In this task we get to know basic calculation tools and different kind of observations of northern lights made e.g., by all-sky camera, satellites, and magnetometers. Task is to search very active and very quiet periods, and then those periods will be compared. We will also get to know main sources of northern lights in solar wind and the Sun. This work is a part of Space storms project funded by the Academy of Finland, and it is a part of FIRI/FLEX-EPOS infrastructure. (Supervisor: Alexander Kozlovsky)
  5. Energetic particle precipitation detection and their consequences on the upper atmospheric ozone chemistry based on ground based and satellite datasets. In the internship, students will learn usage of signal processing methods in the analysis of time-series. (Supervisor: Antti Kero)
  6. Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory is building its own satellite knowledge center with its own satellite mission. This topic includes the designing and developing mechanical satellite and space instruments. We expect you to have the applicable knowledge and education and familiarity with at least one 3D modelling software (e.g. Inventor, SolidWorks). Willingness to learn new skills is appreciated as well as previous experience in space related projects and working with mechanics. There is a possibility to extend this topic into a thesis work. Option to work remotely. (Supervisor: Jouni Envall)

The topics in the English only call:

  1. Solar activity predictions. Solar activity in the form of sunspot numbers, solar flares, coronal mass ejections, solar particle storms, geomagnetic disturbances, etc. varies within the 11-year solar cycle. On top of that, 11-year solar cycles are modulated in their size, from the Maunder minimum in the early 17th century to the Modern maximum in the late 20th century. For planning space missions, it is important to forecast the level of activity. Physically, the solar activity variability has a significant chaotic component and is not expected to be predictable on a timescale longer than 5-10 years. The task of this project is to perform a formal prediction of solar activity using modern AI methods, e.g., machine learning, neural network, etc. and define the limit of its predictability. The work will be performed at the Oulu campus, under the supervision of Prof. Usoskin. Candidates should possess a basic knowledge of AI methods and corresponding programming skills. (Supervisor Ilya Usoskin)
  2. Organization of telemetry, alerts and safe code deployment for remote neutron monitors in Antarctica. In particular, the trainee will assemble a prototype of our current infrastructure in Antarctica (2 raspberry Pi's + network) and write code for the telemetry acquisition, alerts and safe code deployment. He/she will learn how to work with Linux, how to operate remote servers, how to write bash scripts. (Supervisor Stepan Poluianov)

In addition, we have couple of one month long positions open for 15-18 years olds interested in career in science. These tasks include different research assistant and data archiving tasks. Please find an application form for these positions here (Other Student Applicants):
